Where Expo Fits in the DAM World

Expo supports the workflow needs of creative and marketing professionals by including asset discovery, centralized asset storage, extensive tagging, easy search, license management and drag-and-drop insertion into their favorite Mac applications.

The world is deluged in products claiming to be digital asset managers (DAMs). Yet there are great differences among all these offerings, mostly because they were designed to solve different problems for different audiences.

Consumer Photo Viewers

Mac OS and Windows include simple photo viewing apps for personal image collections, and other vendors offer alternative photo viewers. These tools can display asset thumbnails, but support only limited filetypes, small amounts of metadata and simple asset tagging. The limited functionality of these consumer apps make them unsatisfactory for creative pros.

Pro Photo Tools

Most of the tools for photographers include support for additional filetypes including RAW format as well as more metadata. These tools enable photographers to view large numbers of images from photo shoots and to select the best images to refine and share with their clients.

Website Asset Managers

Many of today’s web-based DAMs are home-grown tools created by website developers for sharing images across their teams. Unfortunately, these technologies have little use outside web development and do not integrate well with the applications used by designers in their creative workflow.

Prepress and Print Workflow

Printers produce copies of original designs from job folders that contain the project’s required digital assets. Their DAM tools focus on managing print jobs using their production workflow—but not the requirements of the creative workflow that designers used to create the original designs.

Enterprise DAMs

A variety of LAN- and web-based enterprise DAMs address the asset management and workflow needs of the enterprise. Enterprise DAMs tend to focus on asset checkout, document versioning and approval processes.

Creative and Marketing Pros

Ironically, graphic designers, creatives and marketing professionals—the very people who use Macs to drive the creative process—have been poorly served by traditional DAM offerings. Expo supports the creative workflow needs of these users by including Internet asset discovery, centralized asset storage, extensive tagging, easy search, license management and drag-and-drop insertion into their favorite applications.
